Our unit of inquiry (UOI) for the next four weeks will be into How We Organize Ourselves.
Central idea: Businesses depend on local and global supply and demand for goods and services.
The inquiry points we will explore include the following:
The summative assessment for this unit will be a business plan that students will develop for their own goods or services business. The students will sell their products/services to other students and parents on our grade 5 Market Day to be held in December.
We will be continuing with our math program, working on tasks involving decimals, word problems regarding money, and data handling.
The writing focus for the next four weeks will be in persuasive writing. Students will be learning to draw on facts, statistics and quotes through research to strengthen their persuasive pieces.
We will continue to study the main elements of a story through novel studies and A-Z readers connected with the central idea. The focus will be to improve comprehension and interpretive skills. Responsibility for individual reading quietly will be an important part of the time table.
Students will be studying words from their regular “Words their way” program as well as learning new vocabulary from our current unit. Students can practice their words on the Spelling City website.
