Watch the video from Khan Academy to prepare for math class tomorrow. Come to class with your questions.
We jumped right into our new unit today! We arrived at our initial understanding of media through a variety of experiences within the classroom. We had four stations set up:
1. Music (here students listened to six tracks and recorded the emotions and feeling the music evoked.
2. Film: watched a clip of a film - question: who are the people involved in creating this?
3. PRINT MEDIA: students went through a stack of news papers and magazines in different languages and tried to find the target audience of each print media...
4. Brainstormed ideas on what the word " media" means - prior knowledge.
After some interesting discussions and revelations, students arrived at various conclusions that revolved around the following ideas: Music, film and print are forms of media....Media is communication among people; art is also a form of media, we use a lot of electronic media...a lot of us use social media...
Next QUESTION: What is the PURPOSE of media?
In Math we are exploring different strategies to multiply and divide numbers. Below is a simple method to DIVIDE large numbers.
Hi! My name is Preritt And I have been selected for being a house captain. I haven’t yet got a feeling of a house captain because I still have not gone to a swimming gala or sports day. Panashe and I are house captains for Orchard. Cale and Sherrisa are house captains for Somerset. Andjani and Ken are house captains for Raffles and Sara and Jeewoo are house captains for Newton.
Let the battle begin!
KEN: I actually got elected as team captain for Raffles. There was also another person that got elected for Raffles and that is Andjani.
I was happy because I dreamed to be house captain since the end of grade 3. I wanted to because I had hope that we would win again. I surely hope I will have a good time as team captain.House captains are basically people in grade 5 being chosen to be house captains. House captains job is to be responsible and be principled and to be fair. They will lead the team and answer question. House Captains our only in sports day and swimming gala. that means it is between. 2014-2015 There are also 2 house captains.
STUDENT COUNCIL MEMBER: KRISHNA
I like this week because I get to be a student council and played a lot of fun games in play time. When I was doing the speech for student council I was shaking and nervous because I was scared that I wouldn’t be picked but I got picked!. This week has been one of the best week yet in Grade 5!
This week we polished and published stories written from the perspective of various migrants who came to Singapore many years ago.
In Math we looked at different ways/ strategies to multiply numbers. We created number puzzles to apply our understanding of factors, multiples, square and prime numbers.
CONGRATULATIONS PANASHE AND KRISHNA!
Around seven risk takers and leaders volunteered to be on the Student Council this week. They all made speeches, and gave good reasons to convince the class vote. The process is as important as the result and it is wonderful that so many students decided to stand for the Student Council elections to represent 5.1.
Our substitutes are: Ariella and Andjani
PANASHE: "I chose to be a part of Student Council because I think I'm very responsible and I know I can help around the school to make it better ."
Several students have opted to lead as house captains. They have given their applications to Mr Nathan in the form of posters and letters.
"A lot of people in grade 5 want to be captain including me but I am scared who are going to be the captains. I wanted to be the Raffles team captain because I always wanted to be a leader for a bunch of people and my team is Raffles. I guess now we have to wait for the announcement."
Congratulations to Ming Yu on his first oral presentation in English! You are a risk taker Min Yu. Ming Yu presented a news article on pandas in China. Many other fantastic article review presentation were made this week. Go Maya! Go Jeewoo! Go Steven!
