P.E. AND NEW EQUIPMENT IN THE CANTEEN
Mr. Inman prepared a session for the Grade 5’s to play table tennis. We played table tennis in PE and we went against each other in groups of 2 or 3. Most of the groups went team by team like 2 versus 2. We played table tennis or dodgeball. It was pretty fun and we enjoyed very much playing table tennis. All the students are really pleased that we have some new sport equipment to use in the canteen!
WORKING ON OUR SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT TASK
As you know, our central idea for our unit that is almost finished is: Media influences the way we think and act. This week we have been preparing and practicing our Summative Assessment. Our Summative task is that we are supposed to think about a country and audience that needs a product that is reliable to their society. We need to use different media strategies and a specific type of media for our product. You would have learned about the different types of media and media strategies in previous blog posts so if you are not sure, go back and view these posts! Many different countries were represented by our grade level and we really enjoyed the process of the Summative Task.

For this week's assembly we had a special performance from the mandarin students from Grade 1, Grade 3 and Grade 5. It was about the zodiac animals and the story of the order of the zodiac animals. They costumed the zodiac animals as well! We really appreciated the performance because as you know Chinese New Year is very soon! Well done to all the performing students for their creative performances!
Guest Speaker on Media:
This week we had a special guest come in to help us and talk about how media works. The special guest was a mother from another class called Vasya. She talked about how media influences people/audience, she also talked about branding in her presentation on media. We enjoyed learning about media and branding. We felt enthusiastic and interested in this discussion/talk about branding and how media/social media work.

Central Idea Workshop with Ms. Skrtic:
After that We had our wonderful school principal come in and talk to us about how to create a Central idea. We had a small workshop where we did fun things like coming up with the absolute worst idea which was hilarious! When looking at other people’s central ideas we compared our central ideas to each other, also we came up with the best central idea. We had a criteria for making one and the best central idea would be our central idea for the next unit! Overall it was a fantastic experience and we hope that we can do this again. READING BUDDIES with K2:
This week we also had our wonderful reading buddies from K2 (K stands for kindergarten) came to read books with us. We did activities with them such as drawing our favourite pictures and characters that came from the book. Overall, all of us had a blast and so did the Kindergarten students. We felt appreciated our wonderful time with the students and had tons of fun. Have you ever had a reading buddy when you were at school? It would be a pleasure if you can comment your answer.
This week we looked deeper into media. We also started talking about passions and what people do and have as a passion. In literacy we have started looking into persuasive writing and how that influences and affects people. We also did the same with images we would see how images influence people. Images from books and ads and we had to see if the were influencing us to think a certain way.
We discussed about persuasive writing with Ms. Tina. We had to persuade a monster, otherwise the monster was going to eat us in the middle of the night. We needed to have 3 reasons to convince the monster to not eat us. In those 3 reasons we needed 3 alternatives to support that reason and give supporting detail. We also needed an introduction that introduces our problem and gave the reasons we are going to be arguing. That is always in the beginning of the writing. A conclusion restates your arguments and that is always at the end of your writing.

We had lots of guest speakers come to the classes and talk about what their passions were. We also had a guest speaker working in the media come to talk about how companies make ads that will influence us the best they can.
We had a teacher assistant from G1 come and talk about her passion which was cycling and and raising money for charity. Some of the charities she raised money for was the school of hope in Chiang Mai and a cycling charity called ride for rations Singapore and harmony on wheels.

We also had Mr. Taylor come and talk about his passion which is the ocean and if he sees plastic in the ocean he will always try to get it out because he loves the ocean so much that he doesn't like to see it with waste in it.
Then the last one we had was Mr. Jasinska whose passion is marine biology and how he works for that and how it is his passion. He is currently writing PhD about marine biology and they showed us an awesome video about those things. The Video They Showed Us About What They Do.
This is the end of this blog post. This week was very fun! We learned persuasive writing and we got inspired by everyone's passions!

The Media Unit
Recently we have started our new unit HOW WE EXPRESS OURSELVES in which we are learning about media. We are looking at HOW MEDIA INFLUENCES THE WAY WE THINK AND ACT. So far we looked at WHAT IS MEDIA and HOW IT INFLUENCES AUDIENCES. We did a few activities to help us answer those questions and get deeper into what media is.
What we did this is week is we have chosen a partner to work with, and go to Britanica and research about medea using Cornell notes. Also we did a brainstorm about what we all think media is and shared our definition of media in group’s. Than later on we had pictures given to us that we put under Print, Broadcast, Outdoor and Digital and then once done as a class we and Ms.Anji had a debate about what goes where. We also did a skit in groups to represent the central idea.
For us the most valuable experience to the class was the debate about where in media does the CD/DVD belong to because we weren't sure if it goes under Digital or Broadcast since you have control over it and it's pretty high tech but it has the content of BroadCast. It was a good class discussion/debate. And we really enjoyed it too.
We think that this is a very interesting unit and its knowledge will help us a lot in the future.

This Friday, 17 November, will be out ES Fun Run for Houses and to support the Food Bank.
Students are encouraged to donate 50 cents to 2 dollars to the Food Bank.
Students are allowed to dress in house colours with their PE shorts on if they want to. We are also asking them to bring their House Bandanas to show support for their houses.
The Fun Run will take place on the Grass Field.
K1-G2 will come down at their assembly time (1:00) and run/ walk for 12 minutes, earning a point for each lap they run. The house captains, along with a few teachers as needed, will give out rubber bands for each lap completed. At the end of the run/walk, house captains will take the rubber bands and place them in house buckets (one for each house).
G3-G5 will come down at their assembly time (1:30) and run/ walk for 20 minutes, earning a point for each lap. The house captains, along with a few teachers as needed, will give out rubber bands for each lap completed. At the end of 20 minutes, house captains will take the rubber bands and place them in house buckets.
House captains will be responsible for counting the rubber bands after each run, so we can reuse the rubber bands. The scores will be announced by the House Captains at assembly in the future, where the points will be added to the House Scores.

International Day is almost here! As an initiative to reduce waste at ISS we are encouraging everyone to bring your own re-useable container and cutlery to International Day.
Can you please send your child in with a clean re-useable container and cutlery so they may sample the buffet without creating waste.

Recently we've been working on Word Problems in Math using decimals, addition & subtraction. Last week the students worked in groups to solve a problem they were given, then think of a creative way to ACT IT OUT! The students used their creativity to act out their work.
