This week, we learned about poetry. I learned that there are many types of literary devices on poetry, such as Alliteration, Personification, Simile and Metaphor. We watched a video about Onomatopoeia. Onomatopoeia is the sound that represents something. For example, Beep Beep for car sound and Slam for door closing sound.
Also, we made some poetry that are combination of 2 or 3 devices of poetry. I made the poetry using Alliteration and Personification. Alliteration is the type of poetry that have to use word starting with same letter or sound, such as Tally tossed toys to the table behind terrible tiger. Personification have to describe something like people. For example, The sun smiled at me.
I really like this unit and I want to make more poetry and learn more about devices on poetry.
Before the unit actually started, I inquired into the unit, How we Express Ourselves. I looked on ManageBac, and found the central idea; Media can be used to influence specific audiences. I researched online about the key points I wanted; The meaning, types of media and the influences. After that I made a Google Slide (a tool to create digital presentation, like PowerPoint) to show my inquiry about the unit.
I kept on researching, and making slides. After a few days I was ready to present, although in class we had a delay because we didn’t have much time. In the presentation, I discussed first about the definition. Then the types. I know that there are many types but these are the main types. These types are very broad, they split into many smaller types. I explained each type of media, however I didn’t explain one point, the target audience. Next I did a very important part; How media influences audience.
I used a lot of hand gesture, more than other presentations. A big improvement is to slow down, and explain more deeply, not squeezing it into a single sentence. In my presentation I used a lot of pictures, rather than looking at a slide with a lot of words. This style makes the audience focus on me, not the presentation
When I reflect about my week I realize that my favorite part is when we had to pair up to read a poem. We had to be very expressive with one word and our partner would pick the word following the chosen word to be expressive. Then after we read all the words in the poem in this way - we split the poem in two and both partners chose one part to read in a very expressive voice. I especially liked reading my part of the poem.
It was good exercise and fun way to learn.
In our latest inquiry into poetry, we explored ways to use Voice effectively to make our thoughts heard.
SANGE JE, CO-OWNER OF SIMPLY PANCAKES - Our challenge was, not enough pancakes, we didn’t had enough pancakes to sell. There was a lot of demand to our pancakes but it was sold out so we couldn't make enough money. We couldn’t overcome the challenge.
KEAGAN, CO OWNER OF SIMPLY PANCAKES-
Our business was very successful.
What I learnt -
Advertising is very important because it is the main way of making your business known. The location of your business must be in a public place where lots of customers will be bustling.
Teamwork and cooperation within your group is just as important. Ikram, Sang Je and I were in charge of different jobs. We had to provide our pancakes quickly so I handed the pancakes to Ikram and he put the honey on the pancakes if our customers wanted it. Sang Je was in charge of calculating the money and giving our customers the correct change.
When our pancakes were sold out, we started selling plates for 10c, but then 1 customer that desperately needed our plates came by. We took the chance to raise the price. From this customer, we learnt that in order to make more profits, we should sell our products to the people with the greatest need for them.
And finally, when your stall is popular enough and the demand is high, you increase your price to make more money and profits. If your stall is running at a loss, you lower the price to bring more customers in.
TUVA of FABULNAILS -
Our business was successful because we got a lot of customers and earned a lot of money. My advice to you to make a successful business is To have a lot of advertisements.
Our challenges was to paint all the small finger nails of the K1 to G2. We didn’t overcome the problem but we could still paint their nails.
Central Idea: Media can be used to influence specific audiences.
We started the unit with a pre-assessment to find out our understanding of the term "media."
We are still unravelling the term that seems to include a host of mediums of communication.
This week we tuned into the unit by viewing various pieces of media and reflecting on what it made us feel.
TOMA's Blog post on the PTA event.
On the Friday afternoon it was raining so I thought there was no game night. But I went down to canteen with Koki. I went to canteen because there was some event. Event is to play dodge ball and soccer and bowling and Frisbee. And we can eat popcorn and ice cream and Cotton Candy. I can drink coke. It was fun!
RAYMOND, ONE OF THE BAKERS - Our business was successful because our cupcakes were all sold out very fast. We also made the price higher when the demand was high. So, we earned $190 and our profits were $141.
What were some of the challenges that you faced? How did you overcome them?
There was a lot of competition and people were not really interested in cupcakes. However, we advertised and went around the school to sell the cupcakes and also, we said that the banana cupcakes can make you pretty and the chocolate cupcakes could release your stress.
View life from the lens of a 10 year old, and it will bring much humour and joy. That sums up my experience with my grade 5 students at ISS.
