The third week of school was fun because we started a new unit in P.E which is Athletics. We are going to be focusing on running, jumping and throwing for sports day.On 28 of August we are going to be running at fun run fingers crossed Newton will win.
Another thing we are doing in class is learning about the reasons people migrate.
We did a lot of activities such as making posters for push and pull factors.
Push factors are the reasons you had to be forced to leave. And the pull factors are the reasons you have to leave for a job or a natural disaster.
For example you don’t have a good job at your country so you have to move to another country.Thats a pull factor.
By SASITHON -Today Chelsea, Koji and I made a project about migrating. We thought it wouldn’t turn out that good but we were wrong, it was great! (in our way)
I drew a tank, a model, a tsunami, a sail, two people, houses and I glued stuff.
We were given some pictures, a pair of scissors, glue and a large paper. Our only instruction was to look carefully at the pictures and decide how they connected with our current unit (migration)
Koji, Chelsea and I felt that the pictures could be put in groups to show the reasons people migrate.
I enjoyed the Second week of school.
For P.E, I enjoyed “Creating a Game” because I like playing tag and I enjoyed doing P.E.
The next thing I liked about the Second week of school is that today I made a model to explain what the migration mean. I did this with Sasithon and Chelsea. The model was 3D.
The most fun things in the Second week of school is the trip to the Peranakan Museum. There were a lot of wedding dresses and something like that. I also enjoyed the stamp of Peranakan.
What does "human Migration" really mean??
By Ikram: AUGUST 19, 2015This morning we started the day with some literacy and practiced some handwriting. Ms.Batlaw had to print out some more sheets because it turns out that not everybody had it. Once we got the papers we started practicing cursive.
When we finished the teacher gave us a letter, A, B or C. She said that everybody who is A should just stay in their own place, Bs should go to a different seat and Cs should also go to a different place. After everybody completed her task she said that Bs should go back to their original seats, all the Cs and all the As should just stay where they are sitting.
The teacher asked us why we moved everywhere. Sanje said that A was rich and happy with their lives so they stayed where they are, B is poor and went to somewhere else to do business, earn some money and come back, C is also poor so they went away and stayed there and did business. At the end she asked us to make visual diagram that showed where A, B, and C moved and why.
I agree with Sanje’s idea but people might migrate just for a holiday or they just want to move country to experience new cultures. For my visual project I did countries with arrows to different counties that represent migrations.
I liked it when we moved our seats but writing and thinking of why they moved was not as fun. Drawing the diagram and the small details (like houses, people and ships) was fun although I made a few mistakes.
Today the whole grade 5, went on a field trip around Singapore. We went to a museum called Peranakan museum. A Peranakan is half Malay and half Chinese. They moved to Singapore from Malaysia. They had business here.
I learned about people that made important things in Singapore and also that were significant persons for Singapore and that are not alive any more. I did enjoy it a lot because I took a lot of photos that I can keep and that I can remember. It also was our first Grade 5 field trip and that is very important.
I enjoyed playing game and my favorite game was sparkle. Next time when I play, I want to know more words spelling.
I also liked writing about myself. Because, I usually write about things that is not myself. I like my new class, new classmates because, class is tidy and classmates are kind.
See you tomorrow !
An example can be found under the Home learning section. Look at the drop down menu above. It has a lesson we modeled today.
We started the year with getting to know each other a little. We played some Math games, organized our belongings, labeled books, assigned jobs in the classroom, and wrote about ourselves. The information will be displayed on the wall near the world map so that we can see how far and wide we have travelled, and how rich our class is in cultural diversity.

Welcome to 5.1!
I am very excited to meet my new class tomorrow and start our journey together.
The first week is a short one, and will pass quickly as we settle into new routines, get to know each other, and set new expectations.
In the following 6 weeks we will inquire into Where We Are in Place and Time. Our focus will be looking into the migrant history of Singapore (what better time than now when Singapore celebrates its 50th year of independence!) We will end the unit with inquiring into our own personal family histories, and look at the push and pull factors.
In Math we will focus on Place Value and Order of operations. Multiplication strategies and times tables.
Literacy: Daily 5 reading program, recount writing, narratives.
Its going to be a busy semester with a field trip around the corner..
View life from the lens of a 10 year old, and it will bring much humour and joy. That sums up my experience with my grade 5 students at ISS.
