The girls and boys of 5.1 decided to show their appreciation to the people who have helped them in the past year. So they used the money they had collected from the sales at the Market day and planned a Thank you tea .
The guests were - the cleaning lady Aunty Sim, Mr James who takes care of the errant bees that like to visit our classroom in the midst of lessons , Mr JE, who comes to our rescue every time we have wireless issues, Mr James who helped us with the Elephant garden, Ms Sophie, the ESL teacher, and Ms Victoria, the lunch lady.
The students planned the menu, bought the food and drinks and cups. Tuva made banana cup capes, Toma arranged the salt cookies on a plate. Many volunteered to be servers. Steven performed a skit to entertain, as did Sasi and Chelsea.
Mirai made the invitation cards, and delivered them to the guests.
Hina made beautiful flowers from origami as gifts for our guests.
Keagan and Sacha managed the music.
As good hosts, the girls and boys chatted with their guests.
I think this week was very good because on the Monday, we timed freestyle, brake stroke and backstroke. Some were fast, some were slow. Most people were about 55 seconds to swim the 50m in the freestyle. Brake Stroke and backstroke average were over the 1 minute 10 seconds in the grade 5.
Also, we learned important things in this week. We searched Social, Physical, Emotional and Peer for the UOI. Then we shared what is that mean and think about the change of us.
For example, The Elementary students are playing two square four square, but Middle students are not play two square foursquare. They play Basketball or they are talking and do not play any sport. Also, most time we play at the home, but they go to cinema or they eat the some food in the fast food shop. There are many different change between the Middle and Elementary.

We concluded our inquiry into How the World Works with the summative - students showed their understanding of how energy is transformed ( and can neither be created nor destroyed) by implementing the scientific method of inquiry.
The students had to first develop a question that was worthy of investigation, and then suggest a hypothesis.
They had to identify the variables in their experiment, and explain how the test would be fair.
The students were very creative, and carried out their experiment, and recorded their findings.
O the final day - Friday, each student presented his/her conclusion to the class.
As true inquirers, they quizzed each other - asking tough questions... can you prove the transformation? Are you sure?

During this week, we wrote a story that is about camp. We created our own character for our story. We remember the activities that we did, like tree climbing, water activities and camp fire and put those into our story. We printed the story and drew the picture of it. I remembered this camp when I was writing this story.
We also made a plan for our summative task. We are going to do another science experiment by ourselves to show how the energies are transformed to another energy.
MIRAI'S BLOG POST:
In literacy, we made a story based on our experience at camp. We had to include 3 exciting moments in our story. At first, we planned the characters and how the story goes. Then, we wrote rough draft. It was difficult for me, because we had to end our story in 5 paragraphs. After we wrote rough draft, we typed fair copy and drew a picture for the story. We also edited our work by peers.
In U.O.I, we chose a picture and showed how the energy transformed by drawing and writing. Some people inquired more on coal by watching the brainpop video. Then, we made a plan for our summative project. For the summative project, we have to plan our own scientific experiment and show it by 2-3 minutes presentation. I decided to do an experiment using elastic energy. And the purpose is to show our understanding of energy transformation. Last time, we did almost the same thing in peers. I’m looking forward to work more on the experiment.
In math, we are looking into decimals, fractions, and percentages. And some people are looking into place value. We made word problems and solved it with each others. Then, we looked for challenging problems in nrich math. It was interesting to work on challenging problems by many people, because we can know many ways to solve the problems.
Not a single student returned without learning something new - how to climb a coconut tree, how to make Malaysian pancakes and banana fritters...
Without trying some thing different - washing their plates after meals, making their beds, 30 seconds cold showers.
Without a new social experience - helping a friend on the obstacle challenges, walking with a friend at night to fill up their water bottle, chatting with a student from 5.2 over meals...

SANGJE'S BLOGPOST: Today Sacha’s dad, who is an expert on energy talked to us about solar energy.
I learnt a lot of different things I didn’t know about energy today, and I guess everybody else also learnt something new.
He used appropriate words for us. I am glad that I could learn something new about energy from an energy expert. Since he was an expert, he discussed about something unexpected like 1 hour of solar panel active can produce electricity that we can use for 1 year.
Sacha’s dad is a CEO of an energy company so I could believe him if he said something unbelievable. When Keagan, who focused on solar energy said something unbelievable, I didn’t believe him.
WHAT TOMA HAS TO SAY:
Today I feel interested.
Today after lunch break Sacha’s parent came to show us a presentation. The presentation was about energy because Sacha’s fat her is working on energy. So Sacha’s father show us presentation about energy. He explain us what energy do we use most and explain each energy we use. Presentation was one hour and he gave us many information.
There was hydro energy and wind energy. The presentation was good.
CHELSEA'S THOUGHTS ON THE PRESENTATION:
I feel that today’s presentation was really helpful and informative considering we are learning about energy and the different types of energy. Some of the things I learnt were :
The first energy on earth is Solar energy (SUNLIGHT)
Fossil fuels can only be used once and are NOT replaceable
-RENEWABLE ENERGIES- Solar energy, Wind energy, Water/Tidal energy
You can produce electricity with sunlight.
View life from the lens of a 10 year old, and it will bring much humour and joy. That sums up my experience with my grade 5 students at ISS.
